Escarpment Publishing is AIA Publishing’s Australian self-publishing service imprint. This assisted self-publishing service is for authors whose books fall outside of the AIAP focus on fiction and narrative memoirs; for example, non-fiction and children’s books. It’s also for authors who want to self publish (and so avoid a selection process) and want to do it well, but don’t want to spend the time and money required to learn the necessary skills.
You can be sure that you’ll get personal care from a team with high standards of integrity.
Though Escarpment Publishing is an Australian self-publishing service, we publish books for authors all around the world. However, we particularly welcome submissions from authors residing in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands areas of NSW, Australia. (The name comes from the Illawarra escarpment – the photo of it above is taken from the Newland property, Diamond Light.)
Books will be required to meet basic standards of proficiency and must have socially responsible content. We will advise on what editing is needed, and the book must be, at the very least, professionally copy edited and proofread before we will agree to publish it.
What does a self-publishing service do?
Using a self-publishing service rather than being the self-publisher yourself is like the difference between being an owner builder and employing a building company to build your house – your book being the house. If you are an owner builder (self-publisher), you arrange subcontractors to do the building work (cover, editing, formatting) for you, but you work out the costs, order the materials, communicate with and schedule the subcontractors, and fill in all the forms and pay the costs for building approvals (setting up the title with the ISBN provider & printer). If you employ a builder to build your house (employ a self-publishing service), they do all that for you, but you’ll still decide what colour paint you want on your walls (cover art) and how you want your kitchen to look (interior book design).
What does a self-publishing service cost?
Prices and quality vary, but for us the costs and process for our self-publishing service (Escarpment Publishing) are the same as for AIA Publishing as outlined on the AIAP Submissions page. Vanity presses and other expensive self-publishing services do not offer more than what our reasonably priced service does, though they may make it appear that they do so. The amount of work and costs involved in publishing are the same. We’re a small publisher – so we don’t have big overheads – and we’re known for the quality of our work, whereas some larger publishers are known for their poor quality products.
But don’t take our word for it, join the Alliance of Independent Authors for the most reliable advice and information on self-publishing. They have a watch-dog service that lists companies to avoid and their partner members (we are one) have been vetted so you know if you choose an Alliance of Independent Authors partner member for your publishing services, you’ll not get ripped off.
Books published through Escarpment Publishing are listed on the Escarpment Publishing website.
