What attracted me to The Between State by Joseph A White Jr, was the fascinating subject matter of lucid dreaming mixed with mystery. The protagonist is a scientifically minded character presented with unusual dreams in which he finds himself a witness in someone else’s life. Are these real people? Is he actually experiencing real-life events? Is he going crazy? His experiences confound his rational mind and he seeks to analyse his experience in order to understand it and solve the mystery of what’s going on. This conflict between his subjective experience and his rational analytical mind create a delicious tension.
