Many different elements come into play when answering the question What makes a book successful? In this interview with Beth Duke, we discuss what she did (and didn’t do) that made her book It All Comes Back to You so successful.

What I notice about Beth is her passion for her work and her willingness to talk to anyone about it. That is the basis of any marketing plan, without that passion and willingness to engage with people, you’re never going to sell your books.
Watch the video for the details, but essentially, after Beth shares a little about herself and her book It All Comes Back to Me we talk about:
- The importance of a quality cover,
- The importance of comprehensive editing,
- Word of mouth,
- The assistance of good timing,
- The long game of being a successful author,
- Submitting to magazines and competitions – with a warning.
If you watch the video on YouTube it has chapter markings for the different sections.

Hi Tahlia & Beth, there was some encouraging advice on this post for first-time authors like me! It was especially important to hear about the “long game” of getting your book known.
I’d like to hear more about which magazines and competitions are the best to explore with my book, “Beyond the Reef”, which is a non-fiction memorabilia style.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you found it helpful. As for competitions, you’ll just have to google competitions for memoirs and see what comes up.
