There’s a lot involved in writing a novel, and as with any topic, you don’t know what you don’t know, but what you need to know is what you don’t know. So the question is, how do you know what you need to learn? That’s what this video is all about. In it we lay out the topics that an author will need to learn about at some point – preferably before they submit their first book to a publisher.
If you’re a beginning author, then you need to know what topics you’ll need to study if you’re serious about writing a novel well. And if you’re an author with a few books written, but you haven’t found a publisher, or you self-published without comprehensive editing then you’re likely to also find some topics here that you don’t realise that you need to study.
The list of topics we introduce in this video are a mind map for a complete education on writing a novel.
We’re eventually going to look at each of these topics in turn, but it could take a while for us to find the time to plan and record each video. In the meantime there are many articles on the internet with information about these topics. Once you know what topics you need to study, you can learn a lot with just a bit of research.
And here’s the two graphics from the video for you to use as a checklist.
If you’re a writer, have you studied each of these topics yet? Is there anything on these two lists that you didn’t know you needed to learn about?
